Annotations for Jenny oleary kindergarten boyfriend

Lyric: He pulled a scab off one time playing kick ball
Kissed me quick then pressed it in my hand
Annotation:
There is a dialogue break during Beautiful and Candy Store, where Heather Duke states that Martha and Ram kissed on the kickball field in kindergarten, and Heather McNamara agrees, and says it was “disgusting”

Lyric: To a new kindergarten
Where nap time is centuries long
Annotation:
Martha is most likely referring to Heaven or the Afterlife, just in a childish way, like when kids move schools. She’s (attempting at) going to another realm (?), and basically saying that once she’s there, she’s obviously not going to be alive, and be in a constant ‘nap time’ (death).

Lyric: Past the church
Annotation:
Possibly the church where Kurt and Ram’s double suicides. By flying past the church, she might mean she’s blissfully ignoring the fact that Ram was supposedly gay, instead fantasizing about a relationship she would have with Ram once she was dead.

Lyric: Croquet lawns
Annotation:
The Heathers, in both the musical and movie, are shown playing croquet. In fact, both cast albums picture the Heathers with croquet mallets. Croquet is considered a wealthy sport, played only by the sophisticated. In both the musical and movie, croquet is used to symbolize the status of the Heathers. Martha is talking about escaping the class divides of Westerburg High.

Lyric: Ooh ooh

[MARTHA raises her arms, as if to fly. As she leans back...]
Annotation:
The music has ended before her voice. Similarly to Stay Alive (reprise) in Hamilton, released the year after the initial production of Heathers, the music is her metaphorical “life line.” However, Martha keeps going, representing her still being alive.

Lyric: And this time I’m never waking up
Annotation:
Martha isn’t waking up because she is trying to kill herself.

Lyric: Certain girls are meant to be alone
Annotation:
Martha is referencing herself; she thinks she is unloveable.

Lyric: Then he woke up
Annotation:
This shows that their love (to Martha) was like a dream. Martha clearly thinks he was perfect. This also shows how Ram woke up from that dream and started bullying her to fit in.

Lyric: There was a boy I met in kindergarten
Annotation:
Ram is the boy she is talking about.
